DOROTHY A. MONTGOMERY (Age 92)
Dorothy A. Montgomery, 92, a retired Montgomery County, Md. Public School secretary and an antique car enthusiast, died peacefully November 26th with her three daughters by her side. Dorothy (Dot) was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 57 years, Rayner A. Montgomery (2004). She resided in Silver Spring, Md. for 50 years prior to living with her daughter and her family in West Friendship, Md.
Mrs. Montgomery was born May 5, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from Central High School in 1941 and worked as a stenographer for the Groff Paper Company in St. Paul. Late 1941, she, along with her family, moved to Washington D.C. to find federal employment.
Mrs. Montgomery worked for the Navy Department for 13 years (December 1941 – August 1954) and held the positions of Stenographer, Administrative Assistant, and Administrative Analyst. She also had the pleasure of serving as secretary to then Captain John S. McCain Jr., USN (father of Senator John McCain III) during his tour in the Undersea Warfare Research and Development Office at The Pentagon. She attended Strayer Business College in 1943.
In 1947, Dorothy met and married Rayner A. Montgomery. For four years, she supported Rayner and herself while he completed a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. After Rayner took at job at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory, they started a family and resided in Kensington and later in Silver Spring.
While raising three daughters, Mrs. Montgomery worked in the Montgomery County Public School system at Jackson Road Elementary, Broad Acres Elementary, and Olney Elementary. She retired in 1987 after 19 years of service.
After retirement, Mrs. Montgomery enjoyed spending time with her husband, their daughters, and her daughters’ families. She shared her husband’s passion for antique cars and was an avid square dancer and bridge player.
Survivors include three daughters: Judith A. Rappaport, Columbia, Md.; Cathleen A. Montgomery, married to Mark Sbarra, West Friendship, Md.; Lizabeth R. Montgomery, married to David Knowles, Ashton, Md.; grandchildren, Amy Rappaport, Baltimore; Daniel Rappaport, Washington, D.C.; Gregory Rappaport, Columbia, Md.; Laura Sbarra, Baltimore, Md; Patrick and Greta Knowles, Ashton, Md.; great-grandchild, Joshua Miller, Columbia, Md.
